Asset Naming Conventions

Following clear naming conventions will help in the production process as well as in sales.

Naming Your ASSETs

Giving your ASSETs a clear name and description will help organise your production process by being able to easily identify each unique piece that needs to be created, minted, and implemented.

The same goes for the description of any ASSETs. Not only does it help solidify the tone or character of the ASSET, but in a practical sense, it will help both team and users find the asset.

The name of your ASSET will feature heavily in both The Sandbox's Marketplace as well as search engines, such as Google. Therefore, your assets must be named in a way that makes them easy to find in both of these places.

Remember that there will be a lot of ASSETs on the Marketplace so you will need to make sure that yours stands out and is easy to find.

Tips for Choosing a Name

Characters and Format.

You can use a maximum of 3 words and there is a limit of 50 characters, but in preparation for potential translation in other languages please don’t exceed 40 characters.

Note that the marketplace name display is cut beyond 18 characters, so make sure to include essential information at the start of the name.

Aim to have each word starts with a capital letter, the rest of the letters are lowercase.

The name should accurately represent your asset.

For example, if your ASSET is a car, naming it a "machine" instead of a "car" will make it nearly impossible for people who are searching for car ASSETs to find. Whereas naming it something like "Red Convertible Sports Car" will make it easy for those looking to buy cars to find. To give another example, naming a non-playable character (NPC) something simple like "Bob" will make that NPC hard to find. Whereas naming the NPC "Bob the NPC Citizen" or "Bob the Baker" or "Bob - A Futuristic Police Officer" will increase its chances of being successfully found on search engines.

The name should not contain any dates.

People rarely ever search for dates when they are seeking ASSETs. So you should not include any dates in your asset names, you're likely just wasting any character limits.

Numbers in names should be limited.

Numbers are acceptable in the names of robots, gadgets and weapons, for example. Otherwise, they should be avoided in ASSET names altogether, because it's rare for anyone to search for a specific set of numbers. If you do use numbers, you should not rely entirely on people typing those numbers into search engines in order to find your ASSET because they are far less likely to be found.

You can use special characters like a dash (-) along with numbers in some circumstances. But be aware that if you have a robot and name it "PR-18", then it will be harder to find than if it had the name "Robot - Paper Recycler Model 18 (PR-18)".

Be consistent.

Aim for consistency in your records to avoid confusion. The name of your ASSET must be exactly the same in the Marketplace as it is in your ASSET folders or your tracking documents.

Aim to use English where possible.

English is one of the world's most dominant languages, as well as the main language in The Sandbox community itself. It can also be a handy way to make sure the name is easy to translate. English is also the easiest and most accurate language to translate from via translation software such as Google Translate.

Accented characters should be avoided, if not limited.

Accented characters, for example, Γ©, Γ¨, Γ’, and Γ΄, should be avoided where possible. Accented characters are very rarely seen in the English language, and may be difficult to search for in The Sandbox's Marketplace itself. Advanced search engines such as Google should not have any issues with accented characters and will usually show results for words with or without them - however, the majority of people looking for ASSETs to buy will be searching within The Sandbox's Marketplace.

Special symbols should be avoided.

Special symbols, also known as alt codes, should not be used in ASSET names, because they will make searching for the ASSET difficult to do. They may also break some third-party URLs/links to your ASSET on The Sandbox Marketplace. Some examples of such symbols are: ♦, β™₯, ☺, β™«, Β©, and so on.

Emojis are not supported.

Your ASSET name should not contain any emojis (also known as emotes and emoticons) for the same reason that they should not contain any special/alt characters, as noted above. Examples of emojis are: 😁, 😺, πŸ•, πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§, and so on.

Asset Description Conventions

ASSETs can be given a clear description that will appear on The Sandbox Marketplace. Not only will the description serve as a factor in potential buyer purchasing decisions, but it will also help your ASSET be located when it comes to search engine optimisation (SEO).

Choosing a Description for Your ASSET

  • Descriptions should be in clear English.

  • The maximum length of a description is 300 characters, but we recommend keeping it to 260 so that there is enough space to translate to languages other than English.

  • They should clearly describe your ASSET and be exciting, intriguing or eye-catching.

  • Try to use at least two to three keywords - these are words people are likely to type into search engines. For example, the words Viking, King, Medieval, Magic and Warrior will help people looking for such ASSETs.

  • Emojis and special characters (alt codes) should be avoided.

  • Numbers and dates should be avoided if they can be, otherwise, they'll just eat up your character limit and serve no purpose for search engine optimisation (SEO).

  • Do not put anything like "made by Lisa" or similar in the description. Your name (including a link to your The Sandbox profile to see more of your ASSETs) will automatically show on the ASSET page separately from the description.

  • Do not place URLs/links in descriptions. They will use up your character limit and serve absolutely zero search engine optimisation (SEO) purpose to help people find your ASSET.
